Digoxin tablets and injection both contain the active ingredient digoxin, which is a type of medicine called a cardiac glycoside.
Digoxin is a form of digitalis, a drug that is extracted from the leaves of the foxglove plant. It is used to treat arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Digoxin is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.
Digoxin works directly on the heart muscle. It slows down the rate at which the heart beats, and also increases the force with which the heart muscle contracts with every heartbeat. This makes each heartbeat more efficient at pumping blood around the body.
Digoxin is used to treat certain abnormal heart rhythms caused by abnormal contractions in the upper part of the heart, in particular a condition called atrial fibrillation (AF). In AF, the upper two chambers of the heart, called the atria, contract very rapidly, and the lower two chambers of the heart, called the ventricles, respond by beating rapidly and irregularly. An irregular heartbeat is not very efficient at pumping blood around the body. By slowing the heart rate and making each beat more forceful, digoxin makes the heart pump more efficiently in this condition.
Digoxin is also used to treat heart failure, a condition where the heart's ability to pump blood around the body is diminished. By improving the efficiency of each heartbeat, digoxin allows the heart to continue to effectively pump blood and oxygen around the body.P>The blood level of digoxin that is needed for it to be effective is quite close to the blood level that can cause unwanted effects. This is true of a few medicines, and is described as a narrow therapeutic index. Treatment with the medicine is still safe, but your doctor will monitor your digoxin treatment closely, and may take blood tests to check the level of digoxin in your blood. You should tell your doctor if you experience any side effects during treatment, particularly nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, visual disturbances, heart palpitations or confusion, as these may indicate your blood level of digoxin is too high and that your dose needs reducing.
What is it used for?
Heart failure.Abnormal heart rhythms caused by abnormal contractions in the upper part of the heart (supraventricular arrhythmias).Irregular heartbeat caused by very rapid contraction of the top two chambers of the heart (atrial fibrillation).
How to use Digoxin Oral -Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. Certain foods and medications decrease the absorption of digoxin. Therefore, take digoxin at least 2 hours before or after eating food products high in fiber (such as bran). If you are taking cholestyramine, colestipol, or psyllium, wait at least 2 hours after your digoxin dose before taking any of these products. If you are taking antacids, kaolin-pectin, milk of magnesia, metoclopramide, sulfasalazine, or aminosalicylic acid, take as far apart as possible from your digoxin dose.
Dosage is based on your medical condition, age, body weight, and response to therapy.
Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day.
Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped.
Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Estraderm, estradiol transdermal system, is designed to release estradiol through a rate-limiting membrane continuously upon application to intact skin.
EstradermEstraderm is manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Inc. This medicine is an estrogen hormone used to provide female hormone when the body no longer produces enough. It is also used to help prevent osteoporosis (weakened bones). This medicine may also be used to treat cancer and other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Each Estraderm patch is individually sealed in a protective pouch and is applied directly to the skin. A stiff protective liner covers the adhesive side of the Estraderm patch. Remove the liner by sliding it sideways between your thumb and index finger. Holding the Estraderm patch at one edge, remove the protective liner and discard it. Try to avoid touching the adhesive. Use immediately after removing the liner. If you are using Alora, Vivelle, or Vivelle-Dot peel off one side of the protective liner and discard it. Use the other half of the liner as a handle until you have applied the sticky area, then fold back the remaining side of the patch, pull off the rest of the liner, and smooth the second half of the patch onto your skin. Apply the adhesive side to a clean, dry area of your skin on the trunk of your body (including the buttocks and abdomen). Do not apply to your breasts or waist. Firmly press the patch in place with the palm of your hand for about 10 seconds, to make sure the edges are flat against your skin. When first using Estraderm, start on the lower abdomen. Estraderm is applied only to the abdomen or upper buttock, and is pressed in place with the fingers. Contact with water during bathing, swimming, or showering will not affect the patch. The application site must be rotated. Allow an interval of at least 1 week between applications to a particular site. Alora, Esclim, Estraderm, Vivelle, and Vivelle-Dot patches should be replaced twice a week; Estraderm once weekly. --If you miss a dose...If you forget to apply a new Estraderm patch when you are supposed to, do it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time to change Estraderm patches anyway, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not apply more than the prescribed number of Estraderm patches at a time.
--Storage instructions...
Store the Estraderm patches at room temperature, in their sealed pouches.
Insulin glargine is a type of insulin. Insulin is one of many hormones that help the body turn the food we eat into energy. This is done by using the glucose (sugar) in the blood as quick energy. Also, insulin helps us store energy that we can use later. When you have diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes), your body does not produce enough insulin, or the insulin produced is not used properly. This causes you to have too much sugar in your blood. Like other types of insulin, insulin glargine is used to keep your blood sugar level close to normal. Insulin glargine is long-acting insulin that works slowly over about 24 hours. You may have to use insulin glargine in combination with another type of insulin or with a type of oral diabetes medicine to keep your blood sugar under control.
Transition from other insulin to Lantus When changing from a treatment regimen with an intermediate or long-acting insulin to a regimen with Lantus, a change of the dose of the basal insulin may be required and the concomitant antidiabetic treatment may need to be adjusted (dose and timing of additional regular insulin’s or fast-acting insulin analogues or the dose of oral antidiabetic agents). To reduce the risk of nocturnal and early morning hypoglycaemia, patients who are changing their basal insulin regimen from a twice daily NPH insulin to a once daily regimen with Lantus should reduce their daily dose of basal insulin by 20-30% during the first weeks of treatment. During the first weeks the reduction should, at least partially, be compensated by an increase in mealtime insulin, after this period the regimen should be adjusted individually. As with other insulin analogues, patients with high insulin doses because of antibodies to human insulin may experience an improved insulin response with Lantus. Close metabolic monitoring is recommended during the transition and in the initial weeks thereafter. With improved metabolic control and resulting increase in insulin sensitivity a further adjustment in dosage regimen may become necessary. Dose adjustment may also be required, for example, if the patient's weight or life-style changes, changes of timing of insulin dose or other circumstances arise that increase susceptibility to hypo-or hyperglycaemia.
AdministrationLantus is administered subcutaneously. Lantus should not be administered intravenously. The prolonged duration of action of Lantus is dependent on its injection into subcutaneous tissue. Intravenous administration of the usual subcutaneous dose could result in severe hypoglycaemia.
Interaction:
A number of substances affect glucose metabolism and may require dose adjustment of insulin glargine. Substances that may enhance the blood-glucose-lowering effect and increase susceptibility to hypoglycaemia include oral antidiabetic agents, ACE inhibitors, disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, MAO inhibitors, pentoxifylline, propoxyphene, salicylates and sulphonamide antibiotics. Substances that may reduce the blood-glucose-lowering effect include corticosteroids, danazol, diazoxide, diuretics, glucagon, isoniazid, oestrogens and progestogens, phenothiazine derivatives, somatropin, sympathomimetic agents (e.g. epinephrine [adrenaline], salbutamol, terbutaline), thyroid hormones, atypical antipsychotic medicinal products (e.g. clozapine and olanzapine) and protease inhibitors. Beta-blockers, clonidine, lithium salts or alcohol may either potentiate or weaken the blood-glucose-lowering effect of insulin. Pentamidine may cause hypoglycaemia, which may sometimes be followed by hyperglycaemia. In addition, under the influence of sympatholytic medicinal products such as beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine and reserpine, the signs of adrenergic counter-regulation may be reduced or absent.
This medication is used along with controlled ultraviolet light (UVA) to help control severe psoriasis.
Methoxsalen belongs to a class of drugs known as psoralen photosensitizers. It works by making certain parts of the skin more sensitive to UVA light, causing a skin reaction that helps to shrink psoriasis plaques.
Pulmicort Turbuhaler is an inhaled corticosteroid. The medication in your Pulmicort Turbuhaler works to reduce and prevent inflammation in your airways and helps manage your asthma symptoms when used regularly.
The actual device for the medication is called a Turbuhaler. Pulmicort Turbuhaler is a simple-to-use delivery system that is inhalation driven.
"Inhalation driven" means that when you breathe in through your Pulmicort Turbuhaler, your medication is delivered to your lungs. Unlike aerosol inhalers, no propellants, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), are necessary to deliver your medication.
Side Effects -Common side effects include :respiratory infection headache oral candidiasis (thrush in the mouth) pharyngitis (sore throat) voice alteration (hoarseness) sinusitis
Caution -If you are switching to Pulmicort Turbuhaler from an oral corticosteroid, carefully follow your doctor's/health care provider's instructions regarding the use of your corticosteroid to avoid serious health risks associated with stopping the use of oral corticosteroids.
What is the medication in Pulmicort Turbuhaler? The medication in Pulmicort Turbuhaler is called budesonide, a synthetic corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are natural substances found in the body that help fight inflammation. Corticosteroids are used to treat asthma because they reduce swelling and irritation in the walls of the small air passages and ease breathing problems. When inhaled regularly, corticosteroids also help prevent asthma attacks.
How does the medication in Pulmicort Turbuhaler reach my lungs?Pulmicort Turbuhaler uses the airflow created by your breath when you inhale. Simply by taking a deep and forceful breath, you get the medication into your lungs.
Pulmicort Turbuhaler is not a bronchodilator and is not intended to treat acute asthma attacks.
Improvement of your condition after using Pulmicort Turbuhaler can occur within 24 hours. It may, however, take 1 to 2 weeks or longer before you feel maximum benefit, so it is very important that you use your Pulmicort Turbuhaler regularly and as directed by your doctor/health care provider. Do not stop treatment unless told to do so by your doctor/health care provider. Call your doctor/health care provider if your symptoms do not improve or your condition worsens.
Should I keep using my Pulmicort Turbuhaler even when I feel better?Yes, it is important to use Pulmicort Turbuhaler every day even if you feel better because it treats the chronic, underlying part of your asthma. This is the inflammation--the "quiet part" of asthma that you may not hear, see, or feel. When it is left untreated, it can worsen. Your lungs can become more inflamed and your asthma symptoms and attacks can increase. When you use Pulmicort Turbuhaler every day, it works to reduce and prevent your asthma symptoms and flare-ups.
You should keep using your Pulmicort Turbuhaler as instructed unless your doctor/health care provider tells you otherwise. Only your doctor/health care provider should instruct you to stop taking your medication.
Can I use my Pulmicort Turbuhaler to stop an acute asthma attack? No. Pulmicort Turbuhaler is not a reliever medication and should not be used to treat an acute asthma attack. You need to take your reliever medication (bronchodilator) as prescribed by your doctor/health care provider. If your attack is not relieved or gets worse, contact your doctor/health care provider immediately.
Pulmicort Turbuhaler is not a bronchodilator and is not intended to treat acute asthma attacks
Reminyl is not claimed to be a cure for Alzheimer's disease. It treats only the symptoms and there is no evidence to show that it could halt or reverse the process of cell damage that causes Alzheimer's disease.
Who might benefit?Reminyl is intended only for people with Alzheimer's disease, and not for people with other kinds of dementia. It is licensed only for people who are in the mild to moderately severe stages of the illness.
It is important to realise that unfortunately Reminyl will not help everyone who tries it.
Effects -The effect of the drug will vary for different people. Some will not notice an effect at all. Others may find that their condition improves, or that they stay the same when they would have expected to get gradually less able because of the progression of Alzheimer's disease.
For most who take it there will not be a dramatic improvement, but the drug may help to stop symptoms getting worse. Janssen-Cilag and Shire, who manufacture the drug, did studies looking at the drug’s effect on memory and understanding, behaviour and people’s ability to carry out daily living activities.
The results of the studies are averages, so some people did better and some worse than the average. It is not possible to tell whether the drug will have an effect for any particular person.
On one measure of understanding and memory, people with Alzheimer's disease without treatment normally score 5-11 points worse after a year. After a year on the high dose of Reminyl, the average score of people taking Reminyl had stayed the same, and about a third had improved by 4 points. However, it must be remembered that 15% of people taking the placebo (dummy pill) also improved by the same amount. (This is a common effect in clinical trials when people take a placebo.)
For those who took Reminyl, behavioural symptoms such as anxiety, hallucinations and wandering on average did not get worse over the course of a five month study. For some people these symptoms improved, while for those not taking the drug they got significantly worse.
For activities of daily living, on average, people taking Reminyl also remained the same over a year, whereas those not taking the drug got worse at activities like bathing, managing money and preparing food.
Most important fact about this drug - You should have frequent checkups with your doctor if you take Voltaren regularly. Ulcers or internal bleeding can occur without warning.
Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Inc. This medicine is an antiemetic used to prevent nausea and vomiting. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
