Erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide (eh-rith-roe-MYE-sin and BEN-zoe-ill per-OX-ide) combination is used to help control acne.

This medicine is applied to the skin. It may be used alone or with other medicines that are applied to the skin or taken by mouth for acne.

Benzoyl peroxide has an antibacterial effect. It also has a mild drying effect that allows excess oils and dirt to be easily washed away.

Erythromycin is an antibiotic. Erythromycin topical prevents bacteria from growing on the skin.

Together, benzoyl peroxide and erythromycin are used to treat acne.A combination of the antibiotic erythromycin and the antibacterial agent benzoyl peroxide, Benzamycin is effective in stopping the bacteria that cause acne and in reducing acne infection.
Benzamycin® also known asErythromycin-benzoyl peroxide gel is an anti-biotic with an oxidizing agent used for the treatment of acne

Erythromycin is a bacteriostatic macrolide antibiotic, but may be bactericidal in high concentrations. Although the mechanism by which erythromycin acts in reducing inflammatory lesions of acne vulgaris is not fully elucidated, it is presumably due to its antibiotic action. It inhibits the growth of P. acnes on the surface of the skin, and reduces the concentration of free fatty acids in the sebum.

Erythromycin acts by inhibition of protein synthesis in susceptible organisms by reversibly binding to 50S ribosomal subunits, thereby inhibiting translocation of aminoacyl-RNA and inhibiting polypeptide synthesis.

Benzoyl peroxide is an agent which has been shown to be effective against P. acnes, an anaerobe found in sebaceous follicles and comedones. The antibacterial action of benzoyl peroxide is believed to be due to the release of active oxygen. Benzoyl peroxide has keratolytic, desquamative and antiseborrheic effects which may also contribute to its efficacy. Benzoyl peroxide has been shown to be absorbed by the skin where it is converted to benzoic acid. Approximately 5% of the metabolite is excreted unchanged in the urine.

Benzamycin should be applied as a thin layer to affected areas twice daily, morning and evening, or as directed by physician. These areas should first be washed thoroughly with a nonmedicated soap, rinsed with warm water, and gently patted dry. Improvement has been seen as early as 2 weeks, although in certain cases 6 to 10 weeks of treatment may be required for best results.

A therapeutic dose should be administered for at least 10 days.Prevention of Initial Attacks of Rheumatic Fever:Penicillin is considered to be the drug of choice in the prevention of initial attacks of rheumatic fever (treatment of Group A beta-haemolytic streptococcal infections of the upper respiratory tract e.g. tonsillitis or pharyngitis). Erythromycin is indicated for the treatment of penicillin-allergic patients. The therapeutic dose should be administered for 10 days.Prevention of Recurrent Attacks of Rheumatic Fever:Prevention of Bacterial Endocarditis:Alpha-haemolytic streptococci (viridans group):Staphylococcus aureus: Acute infections of skin and soft tissue of mild to moderate severity. In treatment of primary syphilis, spinal fluid examinations should be done before treatment and as part of follow-up therapy. Erythromycin should not be used for the treatment of syphilis in pregnancy because it cannot be relied upon to cure an infected foetus.Corynebacterium diphtheriae: As an adjunct to antitoxin, to prevent establishment of carriers, and to eradicate the organism in carriers.Corynebacterium minutissimum: For the treatment of erythrasma.Entamoeba histolytica: In treatment of intestinal amoebiasis only. Extra-enteric amoebiasis requires treatment with other agents.Listeria monocytogenes: Bordetella pertussis: Legionnaire's Disease: Dosage and AdministrationE-Mycin suspensions and tablets may be administered without regard to meals.Children:Age, weight, and severity of the infection are important factors in determining the proper dosage.
